A humanistic sans-serif typeface.

The typeface is inspired from the shapes of numbers which were in the street signs in Sao Paulo, Mexico city and Berlin in 2010.

I started from the numbers(1, 5 and 6) because most of my visual memory of type face of those trip was numbers in signs, then tried to apply characteristics to other letters.

The numbers had simple and retro futuristic shape, and I was interested in putting a bit of elegant feel to that.

The letters have low x-height, inscriptional proportion of uppercase and compact and spatial lowercase, and those terminals are cut perpendicularly.

The lineal display style is for a project of a restaurant identity in Barcelona.

The project is still on going by Raquel Quevedo.

Paper craft // sign-module

This book-like paper craft kit contains a frame structure, black modules and yellow modules.

Changing black and yellow modules makes a letter.

It covers all of capital letters, lower case letters and numbers. (even more creative signs are possible!)

The kit is not built, so first people who bought it have to build the all structure and modules, then can make letters. (with friendly instructions)

It was a project with Raquel Quevedo as Armandos.

Binding experiment: Abend specimen

It was a project in bookbinding course.

The idea was to experiment the relation of expression/perception of pages and bookbinding.

The book has 2 parts; one part has folded paper which includes a phrase crossing 8 pages, and another part has normal booklet bindings.

I tried to express a sequence with a continuation in first part with a folding paper and a separation in second part with normal booklets.

I made a white and a black book used different paper and print but the contents are same.

Logos and typefaces for abend and abendkollektiv.

abend is a techno music dance party in Tokyo which have been since 1999.

abendkollektiv is their label since 2011.

The typeface inspired from 30s-40s German type in newspaper titles.

Irregular pattern generator

A project of making patterns with typing.

Each typed letter corresponds a piece of a pattern, so any kind of text generates an irregular pattern.

There are 3 versiones.

Samples are layered by all caps and small caps versions with same text. (Sample 1 and 3: with all caps and small caps, sample 2: with all caps)

Font supplement: Orator supplement

Small case letters and old style figures to set with a monospaced typeface Orator.
Although the concept of Orator was originally made to set with Caps and small caps to have clear letter shapes for IBM typewriter, against its concept, the idea of this project is to set in small case letters to use for some sentences, more than words. We don’t read so much text set with small caps nowadays, so it can be difficult to read a text set only in small caps even it has clear letter shapes.

Original Slanted style is literally just slanted. Slanted letters in this supplement are refined shapes.

Imaginary city map composer (Spanish ver.): Las ciudades invisibles

A project for a disk cover design.

The music was inspired by a book called Las ciudades invisibles(Invisible cities: Italo Calvino).

The objective of this project is to make letters, words or sentences a visual image of the city as the stories of the book are based on storytelling of imaginary city’s descriptions.

Each image of this project come from a text. Each letter is converted to a piece of map, so whatever is typed, it will form a certain city map.

This version is adjusted to Spanish text.

The project is in progress.

Partiendo de allá y andando tres jornadas hacia levante, el hombre se encuentra en Diomira, ciudad con sesenta cúplas de plata, estatuasde bronce de todos los dioses, calles pavimentadas de estaño, un teatro de cristal, un gallo de oro que canta todas las mañanas  en lo alto de una torre. Todas estas bellezas el viajero ya las conoce por hablarlas visto también en otras ciudades. Pero es propio de ésta que quien llega una noche de septiembre, cuando los días se acortan y las lámparas multicolores se encienden todas a la vez sobre las puertas de las freidurías, y desde una terraza una voz de mujer grita: ¡uh!, siente envidia de los que ahora creen haber vivido ya una noche igual a ésta y haber sido aquella vez felices.

Layered 3 stories about a city

Font: 06RM & 12 RM

This project is focused on the typesetting in Ryumin M-KL which is one of the most popular font for texts in Japanese.

Often the typesetting in Japanese fonts with some words in roman alphabets has problems to make the set well fitted. This project is to solve those problems.

There are 2 versions which are for uses in around 6pt and around 12pt. 06RM also works well in small-size European type-setting.

Problems in mixed typesetting

Japanese letters don’t have concepts of the ascender, the descender and the x-height, and generally set centered and in mono-space. So that the mixed typesetting with roman alphabets always have a problem that words are outstanding too much in the sentence. The graphic below shows what will happen in mixed typesetting.

How to solve the problems

To fit in Japanese type settings, it is required that the letters are wide and have a high x-height and short ascender and descender.
